I began this painting just after returning from the Northern Territory, during a time when I had become completely caught up in the idea that we were going to find our way back to each other.
I was so certain of it that, for moments, the other possibility seemed to disappear entirely.
This painting was meant for him.
But then my mind would shift.
Suddenly I could see a completely different reality. One where we weren't getting back together. One where I had to let go. And somehow, that version could feel just as convincing as the one I had been living inside moments before.
The painting became less about which version was true and more about the strange spaces our minds can exist between. The space between believing and knowing, imagining and accepting, holding on and letting go. Nothing around me had necessarily changed, yet internally I could move from one reality into another.
The forms in the centre sit amongst layers of marks that overlap, change direction and interrupt one another. To me, they feel like something being held inside all that movement. Love, possibility, memory, or perhaps simply the parts of a story that remain while everything around them keeps changing.
I still don't know which reality this painting belongs to.
Maybe that is why it feels right that it was meant for him.
It exists somewhere between what was, what is, and what I imagined could still be.
