I made The Space Between somewhere in the middle of a breakup.
It began with the space between you and me. Between holding on and letting go. Between knowing something had ended and wondering if it really had.
As I painted, I started to notice that the work was becoming a reflection of more than just our relationship. It began to hold something I think we all experience: the strange, uncertain space between one phase of life and the next.
The darker marks surrounding the centre reflect the weight and uncertainty of being in this space. They almost close in around the open pink centre, creating the feeling of being inside something, surrounded by what has been, while facing an unknown opening ahead. The pink becomes a softer space within the uncertainty. Not an answer, but a place to pause, feel and exist before moving forward.
The horizontal line across the bottom feels like a boundary or horizon. A point between where I have been and where I might go next.
The painting itself is unfinished. Layers have been built, covered and scraped back, and I still want to add more. I can see things I would change, but I am resisting the urge to do so. Because just like the relationship, I am not the only one in control of what this becomes.
AND that's the point.
Maybe the painting isn't finished. OR maybe it is.
